MISCANTHUS - A SUSTANABLE, VERSATILE CROP

Miscanthus Giganteus (or elephant grass as it is sometimes known) is a biomass crop originating from South East Asia. Initially introduced into Europe as an ornamental garden plant, it is now one of the most environmentally sustainable crops grown in the UK. One of it's primary uses is as a efficient biomas fuel. It is also used for specialist bedding for horses. It provides a natural, environmentally beneficial, economical, low dust, ultra absorbent and durable bed. A growing by-product of the bedding production is eco-friendly logs for domestic fuel.

Miscanthus is a non-invasive crop grown from a rhizome, quite literally plant and leave, with little or no requirement for fertilisers or pesticides once established. It is a perennial plant with an estimated productive life of around 16 years. It grows to 3-4 m in height and the stems and leaves can be harvested annually. This low intensity, versatile crop grows easily in challenging conditions and creates a structured, sustainable base that is ecologically beneficial. During the lifecycle of the crop Miscanthus is very efficient at capturing and storing carbon, having a positive effect on the environment.

Biomass grass crops (such as miscanthus) can provide substantially improved habitat for many forms of native wildlife, due to the low intensity of the agricultural management system and the untreated headlands.
